Plasma Screen Use Policy

The main purpose of the overhead plasma screen (and the attached speakers) is to support the curriculum and other academic endeavors of the Duke Community, with preference going to patrons wishing to use Music Media Center materials.1

Patrons wishing to use the plasma screen in groups of 1-4 must use headphones.

  • Availability being first-come first-served.
  • Item to be viewed must be a Duke Libraries media item (Music or Lilly) or a professor's personal copy on reserve.
  • Item and headphones must be checked out (which means patrons must possess a Duke ID or other Duke Libraries privileges, such as TRLN or campus borrower).
  • Viewing sessions should be limited to 3 hours or less (although for longer works/operas this restriction may be waived).

Patrons wishing to use the plasma screen in larger groups (5-10 max) may use the wall speakers.

  • A reservation must be made with a full-time staff member of the Music Media Center at least 3 business days in advance.2
  • Item to be viewed must be Music Media Center-owned or a professor's personal copy on reserve.
  • Volume must be kept at a reasonable level so as to minimize the disturbance to others in the MMC.3
  • Viewing sessions should be limited to 3 hours or less (although for longer works/operas this restriction may be waived).

Groups larger than 10 are generally not allowed, although special requests from faculty or TAs may be considered. Requests should be made to Kirstin Dougan (kirstin.dougan@duke.edu) at least 5 business days in advance.

1 Library staff members reserve the right to refuse use of the plasma screen to any group based on the current traffic level in the Media Center or the content of the item to be viewed.

2 Staff: use the same calendar that the media cart is checked out on, but indicate “Plasma” in the reservation notation.

3 Staff have the right to ask patrons to turn the sound down should it be deemed to be disruptive.

Questions may be referred to Kirstin Dougan, Public Services Librarian (660-5953 or kirstin.dougan@duke.edu)
